San Pedro Tutule  and Santiago Puringla Schools, Honduras

These two school projects carried out by Plan Honduras in 2020 and 2021 set out to improve facilities at two schools in the coffee growing area of La Paz benefitting 328 children across one junior/middle and one senior school. By improving the facilities in these two communities and providing new classrooms, libraries, sanitation and water access, the children are now able to enjoy a safe, quality education and for the first time the girls can feel secure and protected whilst using the toilets. As well as creating student councils and Parent Teacher Associations at both schools; Plan Honduras also carried out community programmes to encourage girls to attend school .

The addition of two classrooms in San Pedro Tutule School enabled an increase in student enrolment of 70 with the three classrooms at Santiago Puringla adding a further 120 students. In addition, new perimeter fencing was added to improve security at the school and ramps were added to the compounds to enable access for the disabled. Finally; small libraries were added to the school along with the relevant furniture and books.

“The library is a great opportunity for us as students to practise reading because we haven’t really encouraged reading here; not because we haven’t wanted to but because we didn’t have the access and space to practise it. Today many children will strengthen their knowledge and we will enjoy reading a lot” Bianca – student.
