Education in Honduras is free and compulsory for six years. Nevertheless, in rural areas, just 34% of children complete primary school, mostly due to a lack of schools, but also because of enrolment, uniform and transportation costs. Many schools are just a one or two-room set-up, inadequate for the needs of the pupils and teachers often go unpaid for months at a time.
